Project Overview

This project was funded by the Ministry of Agriculture of Greece, under the project "Greek Farms".

Exploring Cretan Local Products

Recently, I had the chance to explore some of Crete's remarkable local products with an extraordinary person: Chef Kontizas, one of Greece's leading chefs. Together, we tasted the Vilana grape and discussed the Peza wine region, a significant area in Cretan viticulture.

Exploring the Vilana Grape: A Taste of Crete

Vilana is a white grape variety native to Crete. It thrives in the island’s warm climate and rocky soil, producing wines that are fresh, aromatic, and elegant. The grape’s subtle floral notes and crisp acidity make it a perfect match for many local dishes.

When tasting Vilana, I noticed its delicate balance. The wine carries hints of citrus and herbs, reflecting the island’s natural landscape. Vilana pairs beautifully with seafood, light salads, and soft cheeses. It’s a versatile grape that captures the essence of Crete in every sip.

If you want to experience Vilana at its best, look for wines from the Peza region. The terroir there enhances the grape’s character, giving it a distinct minerality and depth.

Peza Wine Region: Heart of Cretan Winemaking

Peza is one of Crete’s most important wine regions. Located near Heraklion, it benefits from a unique combination of altitude, soil, and climate. The vineyards sit on limestone-rich soil, which contributes to the wines’ mineral notes.

The region is known for both red and white varieties, but Vilana stands out as a signature white grape. Peza’s winemakers focus on quality and tradition, often using organic and sustainable methods. This respect for nature and heritage shows in the wines’ purity and complexity.

Visiting Peza offers more than just wine tasting. The landscape is stunning, with rolling hills and olive groves. Local tavernas serve dishes that complement the wines perfectly. It’s a place where food and wine come together naturally.

Pairing Vilana with Local Flavors

During our tasting, Chef Kontizas shared his insights on pairing Vilana with Cretan cuisine. The grape’s fresh acidity cuts through rich flavors, making it ideal for dishes with olive oil, herbs, and lemon.

Some of the best pairings include:

  • Grilled octopus with lemon and oregano

  • Cretan dakos salad with tomatoes and feta

  • Soft cheeses like mizithra or anthotyro

  • Light fish dishes with herbs and garlic

Vilana’s versatility means it can also accompany appetizers or be enjoyed on its own. Its crispness refreshes the palate, making it a great choice for warm days.
